TheMess: A Luxury Restaurant Design by Sasha Bikoff

As a top interior designer, Sasha Bikoff’s style is influenced by the multicultural flavors of her hometown, New York City, and from her experiences traveling abroad. With the main goal to build a stunning interior design project, Sasha sources antique and vintage items from around the world, as well as couture fashion fabrics. There’s probably no more important skill as an interior designer than adaptability. This restaurant design took Sasha Bikoff out of her comfort zone – usually designing maximalist spaces for the young and wealthy, this contemporary project was a huge challenge.

TheMess is a modern restaurant near Manhattan’s Union Square. Drawing inspiration from iconic restaurants such as Monkey Bar and Indochine, and choosing a palette of vermillion red and light blue based on a pair of Adidas sandals she spotted a friend wearing, Sasha Bikoff totally changed the reclaimed wood and tile-clad eating quarters formerly known as All’onda.

“First I thought about color and automatically veered toward red because red makes people hungry and it’s also a celebratory color. (…) Then I started realizing that all of the places that I love and all of the places that are iconic to New York and to the world have these amazing wallpapers. People automatically attribute the wallpaper to that restaurant, to the amazing night that they had. It strikes a memory.” – Sasha Bikoff

To produce a memorable effect, she chose a Mimi chinoiserie wallpaper alongside powder blue banquettes and Venetian glass mirrors for the restaurant’s main dining room. Sasha Bikoff also employed a fabric version of the Voutsa print on seat cushions and curtains and paired it with authentic bistro chairs flown in from France.
