Nate Berkus is an American interior designer, author, TV host and television personality. He runs the Chicago interior design firm Nate Berkus Associates and has been a regularly featured guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, offering design advice to viewers, as well as coordinating surprise make-overs for people’s homes. He has released numerous lines of products and authored several books.
When asked about his job and style, Nate Berkus says: “My job as a designer is being able to tell my client’s stories through the things they choose for their home. What they’ve seen, who they’ve loved, and where they hope to go next. To me, decorating is the pursuit of what could make a room more interesting, more harmonious, better, what can be discovered, unearthed, combined.” Headquartered in Chicago, Nate Berkus, and his design director and now partner Lauren Gordon, utilize their distinctive points of view to create memorable and inspired spaces. With a marked understanding of antiques, textiles, fine art, and custom design, they bring a timeless and refined vision to every project.

For this apartment, Nake Berkus decked the living room with pieces that make you want to lounge. Its spectacular view of the city features prominently in the seamless indoor/outdoor transition between the living room and patio, while clever and stylish storage solutions were incorporated throughout, inspired by a ship’s cabin. The “magical” design process achieved a timeless blend of periods and styles across the furnishings and finishes.
Chicago Townhouse
Nate Berkus Associates Design Director Lauren Gordon renovated her 1883 Georgian townhouse on Chicago’s Gold Coast to honor its original architecture as well as the antiques she’d collected over the years. As Lauren said, “It was kind of a cathartic experience to be able to implement everything I had dreamed of doing, and it helped me figure out what truly makes me tick aesthetically.” The Carrara marble-topped island, contrasting the black cabinets with brass pulls makes this kitchen perfect.

The mood chosen for this project reflects that sometimes, color is not the way to go. These pieces all come from different eras/countries/styles – but blanketed in whites, they look great together. Nake Berkus Associates “cracked the house open” to create a more gracious floor plan, and invited the natural light in by replacing nearly all the doors and windows with iron and glass.
