At still a young age of 35. Werner partnered with Carl Hansen & Son in 1949 to create the four chairs in a few weeks at the brand’s factory.
Although the CH24, Wishbone chair and the CH25, woven lounge chair, had a huge success, the CH23 dining chair caused a huge impact and turned into the bestseller automatically after released.
The CEO of the company describes the chair as a traditional influence of the Danish designer, standing out among his others designs.
“At that time it probably fitted better into the design of an average home,” Hansen told Dezeen. “It was less avant-garde. The Wishbone chair was extremely avant-garde, and nobody wanted it. Everybody wrote about it – the papers, the few magazines there were in those days – they wrote very highly of it, but nobody bought it.”
The chairs notable seat is made of double woven from a paper cord in a process that takes an experienced weaver 1.5 hours. The result is described as a long lasting 50 years piece.
